Come & Sing Verdi Requiem
with Adrian Partington, with evening concert with Bristol Concert Orchestra and soloists from Welsh National Opera

The day will start at 10am with a choral rehearsal, followed by an afternoon rehearsal together with orchestra (Bristol Concert Orchestra) and soloists from Welsh National Opera in preparation for an informal concert at 7:30pm, all under the inspirational baton of our superb conductor, Adrian Partington.

We hope to fill the hall with singers and leave a little room for an audience for the evening performance!

The aims of the day are to:

• Have fun and enjoy performing this thrilling piece with full orchestral accompaniment and professional soloists
• Raise funds for 2 local charities - all profits are to be donated to BRACE (supporting research into Alzheimer's) and The Julian Trust (supporting Bristol's homeless)
• To celebrate the opening of the Colston Hall's superb new multi-million pound foyer redevelopment

Singers of any standard are welcome - there will be plenty of singers there who know the work well to help out those who may not be so familiar with it - the main aim is to have fun! Scores will be available to hire on the day for £1 - please bring your own if you can!

Dorking Philharmonia is holding an orchestral workshop on Holst’s Planet Suite

All lady singers are invited to a one hour workshop of their own with Justin Doyle in order to provide the wordless part of the Neptune movement.
Ladies are asked to arrive at 2.00pm. After learning their music which will be in six parts, they will rehearse with the orchestra for a short time.

After the rehearsal there will be tea and cakes for all. The informal performance will begin at 4.15pm.

An audience is invited to attend and tickets cost £3.00.

It would be helpful to know how many ladies may be able to attend and whether sopranos or altos. Please could all choirs and individuals respond as soon as possible.

Bulgarian singing has a unique style, whose fiery rhythms and unusual harmonies “melt” the soul, a vocal technique which gives power to the voice and voice to the heart.

Participants will have a chance to plunge into this rich living tradition. They will be introduced to the basic techniques of voice production and special vocal effects (like shaking and hiccoughing) used in Bulgarian singing. They will learn fun Bulgarian songs in two and three-part harmony (though discordance might be a better word). Suitable to all who want to make a noise!.

Cost: Students: free. Non-students: £7.50 per session or £20 for all three sessions. Participants are welcome to attend as many sessions as they wish.

Bulgarian singing has a unique style, whose fiery rhythms and unusual harmonies “melt” the soul, a vocal technique which gives power to the voice and voice to the heart.

Participants will have a chance to plunge into this rich living tradition. They will be introduced to the basic techniques of voice production and special vocal effects (like shaking and hiccoughing) used in Bulgarian singing. They will learn fun Bulgarian songs in two and three-part harmony (though discordance might be a better word). Suitable to all who want to make a noise!.

Cost: Students: free. Non-students: £7.50 per session or £20 for all three sessions. Participants are welcome to attend as many sessions as they wish.

The Fauré Requiem rehearsal will be 13:30 - 15:30. The orchestra will then rehearse between 16:00 and 18:30. The concert will start at 19:30, finished 21:30.

Concert dress for singers will be smart black (long skirt/trousers) for the ladies and dinner jackets/bowtie for the gentlemen.

Rachel Staunton is Assistant Director of The National Youth Choirs of Great Britain and has the privilege of directing an eclectic mixture of other ensembles including The New Foundling Children's Choir, Take Twenty Jazz Choir, and Harmony on Heels ladies choir.  Two of her choirs recently enjoyed great success in the BBC Radio 3 Choir of the Year competition. Rachel is a Vocal Animateur for The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, giving regular concerts and workshops on the South Bank and around the country with them.

The event, now in its third year, is part of the Mole Valley Arts Alive festival and is being led by our Musical Director Ian Assersohn. The Fauré Requiem rehearsal will be 13:30 - 15:30. The orchestra will then rehearse between 16:00 and 18:30. The concert will start at 19:30, finished 21:30.

Concert dress for singers will be smart black (long skirt/trousers) for the ladies and dinner jackets/bowtie for the gentlemen.

Cast in the form of a lavish vespers, Orlando Chamber Choir's autumn concert is a meeting of two giants of the Early Baroque, Heinrich Schütz and Claudio Monteverdi. The concert will feature three of Bach’s best known choral works:
The Magnificat,

and the Motet 'Lobet den Herrn' ('Praise the Lord!').

In recognition of Peter’s distinguished career as an organist, the concert also features Handel's Organ Concerto Op.4 no.4, composed in 1735 and first performed as an interlude in Handel’s oratorio, "Athalia".

Acclaimed concert organist Margaret Phillips is the soloist. As it seems so appropriate to the celebratory theme of the evening, the concert concludes with the concerto with its original (now rarely heard) chorus of thanksgiving.

Leith Hill Musical Festival

Bach’s St Matthew Passion was first performed at the Leith Hill Musical Festival in 1931 with a special massed choir of around 800 singers under the Festival’s founding conductor Ralph Vaughan Williams. The performance marked the opening of the Dorking Halls and was in memory of the conductor’s sister and co-founder of the Festival, Margaret Vaughan Williams who had died earlier that year. Eighty years on, the St Matthew Passion performance, now rotated with Bach’s St John Passion and Handel’s Messiah, will open this year’s LHMF season on
Sunday 13th March with Festival Conductor Brian Kay at the helm.

The Christian liturgy of Tenebrae marks Jesus' suffering and death for humanity before the symbolic rebirth of spring. Orlande de Lassus' austere Tenebrae Responsories are offset by his richly plangent Lamentations settings and other penitential motets. James Weeks' new work Orlando Tenebrae, commissioned with support from the BBC Performing Arts Fund, revisits these ancient rites from a secular standpoint, juxtaposing Tenebrae texts with modern poetry of oppression.

Hurst Green Singers, with Shoreham Singers, perform Karl Jenkins' The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace, Haydn's Nelson Mass (part only), Tippett's Spirituals and songs by George Butterworth. The choir will be accompanied by The Hurst Green Sinfonietta. Soloists are Elizabeth Skinner (soprano), Bryony Mycroft (contralto),
David Eaton (tenor) and Matthew Howard (bass).

Accompanied by Guildford Symphony Orchestra

Singers £18 (includes vocal score hire for the day)
Audience £12 (evening performance will have an interval).

Singers participating must arrive at Holy Trinity at 10am to register and collect scores. The rehearsal for the Duruflé will be from 10:30 - 13:00. This will be followed by a short 30 minute lunch break (please bring a packed lunch).

The Fauré Requiem rehearsal will be 13:30 - 15:30. The orchestra will then rehearse between 16:00 and 18:30. The concert will start at 19:30, finished 21:30.

Concert dress for singers will be smart black (long skirt/trousers) for the ladies and dinner jackets/bowtie for the gentlemen.
